Goal Setting

Wow. It’s almost 2020. The turn of a new decade. The ‘roaring twenties’ as they say. This is very appropriate as most of us in the group fall into the ‘mid twenties’ demographic. How do we ensure that our twenties keep roaring, and don’t turn into the ‘dirty thirties?’ The answer is: Planning and Goal Setting! Why not make January 1st 2020 the start of your five year or ten year plan? Or, if perhaps you’re not yet ready to make a plan, why not a simple New Year’s Resolution.

The most recent ‘ten year plan’ that comes to mind for me has to be Elon Musk’s Master Plan written on August 2nd 2006. The world was a lot different in 2006. Elon wasn’t nearly as famous. Tesla was only three years old. I only discovered his first master plan when he wrote Master Plan Part Deux. Looking back, it looks like he hit his first plan pretty bang on. 4 years into this second plan, I’d say he’s on track, however he may be facing some challenges with Solar City. I’m interested to see how accurate he’ll be in 2026.

Elon made his first master plan when he was 35 years old. He had a significant amount of power and resources to architect and execute his plans. We’re a decade younger, but it doesn’t hurt to start thinking about longer term planning and executing. I’ve barely started to grasp month-month planning at work. However I notice that the highest executives in countries/companies are typically working towards multiple long term plans. As part of being my life’s own CEO (yearning octopus from last month) I’m trying to further define my longer term planning.

Please join us for breakfast this Friday December 20th for the final Early Birds > Late Worms breakfast of the year. Please be prepared to share some (nonbinding) goals/plans and thoughts about the future. Bonus points for those who can share some successes/failures of older plans ending by years end.
